Senate Republicans were told to keep quiet about the indictment Tuesday of Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens. Apparently, Republicans in the House never got that memo. It s clearly another kick in the gut to the institution, said Florida Rep. Adam Putnam, the third-ranking Republican in the House, responding to a question about whether Stevens s indictment derails the GOP s recent energy push. It s just a sad day for the institution. It s bad all around. Illinois Rep. Mark Kirk - a fellow Republicanwho, like Stevens,serves on the Appropriations Committee and hasa tough reelection fight on his hands - went a step further than Putnam by seizing on the indictment to push legislation depriving taxpayer-funded stanley thermobecher pensions to members of Congress who have stanley termosar been convicted of a felony not covered under the current law. For the record, Stevens, who proclaimed his innocence Tuesday afternoon, has not been convict stanley cup ed of anything. Congress approved legislation last year banning pensions for any member convicted of approximately 11 separate felonies. According to Kirk, those crimes did not include making false statements - a charge on which the Justice Department indicted Stevens with seven separate counts. Kirk has offered legislation adding 21 other crimes to that roster. There was a day when Republicans walked in lockstep with each other. But those days are gone after a trickle of indictments, criminal convictions and other ongoing investigations ag
